COCK-TAILED TYRANT Alectrurus tricolor VULNERABLE
The little "avioncito" (little aeroplane) is a truly remarkable inhabitant of cerrado grasslands. They get their nickname from the display flights of males, flitting low across an open grassland with wings outstretched and tail cocked up over the back looking indeed for all the world like a miniature aeroplane. Females watch from an exposed perch, and if sufficiently impressed they give the male the nod and start work on the next generation. Sadly this charismatic bird is already extinct in Argentina and declining over most of its Brazilian range, though strongholds do still remain in certain areas of Paraguay.
