HORNED SCREAMER Anhima cornuta
With a bizarre bony horn on the front of the head this must be one of the oddest species of birds in Paraguay! Known only from a single site in the Mbaracayú Itaipú Reserve in extreme north-eastern Paraguay right next to the city of Salto del Guairá, the species clearly has a small population. Thanks to Nelson Pérez of the Itaipú Dam Company we were able to observe four adults of this remarkable species along with three chicks during September 2010, a sizeable chunk of the entire Paraguayan population! Anhima is the Spanish name given to lost souls, the lamenting voice and black plumage of this remarkable bird making it a fitting scientific name.
