BLUE-AND-YELLOW MACAW Ara ararauna
Sadly this charismatic macaw is now on the verge of extinction in Paraguay due to hunting for the pet trade - its gorgeous plumage meaning that it fetches a high price on the black market. In the wild state is typical of the cerrado belt but recent records are few and far between. One report in 2006 of a pair of birds in Departamento Canindeyú may have been escapes.
