RED-AND-GREEN MACAW Ara chloropterus
The macaws are the largest members of the parrot family and are distinguished by their bare facial skin. They are intelligent birds that make popular pets but they have declined rapidly as a result of trapping for the pet trade. This species is the only red macaw in Paraguay, but has disappeared from much of its former range. To have a shot at seeing one you´ll need to head up to northern Paraguay where the species remains locally common in areas in which it is not persecuted.
