GOLDEN-CROWNED WARBLER Basileuterus culicivorus
Spend more than a few minutes in the Atlantic forest and if you haven't come across a Golden-crowned Warbler then it won't be long before one comes across you. This pushy little character is probably the most numerous and conspicuous humid forest inhabitant, roving in noisy bands and investigating the onlooker with chirps of annoyance that you have had the gall to interrupt their foraging schedule. Active and acrobatic, they hop through the foliage at all levels, investigating cracks in bark, dead leaves and just about anything else that might be hiding a tasty morsel of food, characteristically flicking the wings and cocking the tail as they pass by. They act as a sort of sentinel for the birds of the forest, being the first to raise the alarm that a birdwatcher is on the loose - usually frustratingly when you are stealthily sneaking up on something rare and unusual! But despite their abundance, they really are a pretty little bird with bags of energy, and you can't help but find them endearing as they accompany you along the forest trails.

"WHITE-BELLIED WARBLER" "Basileuterus hypoleucus"
In the northern Oriental region of Paraguay, this little known warbler is fairly common in subhumid forest. It is similar in many respects to the well-known and widespread Golden-crowned Warbler of the humid forest. So similar are they in fact that they respond to each others call and hybridise wherever they meet. Recent molecular studies have suggested that there is likely a reason for this - they are conspecific! In 2011 the SACC approved a proposal to merge the two species. See:
Smith P 2011 Treat Basileuterus culicivorus as conspecific with Basileuterus hypoleucus. SACC Proposal 493.
