CALLITRICHIDAE - MARMOSETS AND TAMARINS
Distinctive small primates with a non-prehensile tail, represented by a single species in Paraguay. The digits possess claw-like nails. They have small canines and incisors which lack enamel which, combined with the physiology of the lower mandible, are designed for extraction of tree sap. Sociable, in small family groups headed by a single reproductive female. Juveniles are carried by males on their back. Shy, quick to hide and difficult to observe, but vocal.
