CANTHARIDAE - SOLDIER BEETLES
Soldier Beetles are long, soft-bodied beetles with parallel sides and thread-like antennae. Some species are easily confused with Lightning Beetles but note that members of that family have feathered antennae and frequently possess light organs. The head usually protrudes from beneath the large pronotum. The tarsal formula is 5-5-5 and the fourth segment is lobed. Adults usually feed on nectar or pollen, but some species are carnivorous. Larvae have a velvety appearance as a result of a covering of fine hairs and are generally carnivorous.
