CHACO PECCARY Catagonus wagneri
Zoologists had known about the existence of this animal for a while - its subfossil remains were in various museum collections across the globe, though it was thought long extinct. Imagine their surprise then when, in 1975, the animal was found alive and well out in the Paraguayan Chaco - the equivalent of finding a living dinosaur!!! Chaco Peccary (or Tagua as they are known locally) are the largest and stockiest of the pig-like Peccaries, a family of mammals confined to the New World. They are unobtrusive, non-aggressive species that are active during the day. You may come across small herds on dusty tracks out in the wildest parts of the dry Chaco.
