CEBIDAE - NEW WORLD MONKEYS
Four species of small to medium-sized monkeys with flattened snouts and large, forward-facing eyes. The digits are long and flexible, with five digits on both the forefeet (“hands”) and the hindfeet (“feet”). Cebus and Alouatta have prehensile tails. Though most monkeys are diurnal forest-dwellers, Aotus is nocturnal in habits and shows several adaptations for a night-time existence. All species are social, forming troops based around a variety of complex social systems. Aotus and Callicebus are monogamous, Cebus and Alouatta are polygynous. A single offspring is typical in all species. Monkeys are omnivorous, though the majority of the diet is made up of plant matter supplemented by small vertebrates and invertebrates.
