BLOND-CRESTED WOODPECKER Celeus flavescens
A crazy-looking woodpecker with a striking blonde hair-do that earns him the nickname "Billy Idol" amongst local birders. This is the humid forest representative of a superspecies that includes another "Billy Idol", the Pale-crested Woodpecker, its geographic replacement in the Chaco and dry forests of the northern Orient. It is a surprisingly tame species that is unconcerned by the close approach of the viewer, concentrating instead on the more important task of hammering wood!
