SEMIPALMATED PLOVER Charadrius semipalmatus
A fat little plover with a complete white collar, this North American vagrant is a rare sight in Paraguay. In fact the bird in the photos is only the second record of the species here, and the first documented evidence that the bird occurs in the country. It was found by Arne Lesterhuis and Rob Clay who kicked off their 2011 list in spectacular fashion with this record. Arne was just back from a holiday in Santa Catarina, Brazil (where the bird is regular) and could hardly believe his eyes when he clocked one on his regular patch. Rob improvised with some digi-binocularing that gave some surprisingly good results and the bird was finally documented for Paraguay! Luckily the bird hung around for a while!
