GREEN KINGFISHER Chloroceryle americana
This pocket-sized fisherman bears a dagger-like bill that is the scourge of any fish small enough to be swallowed. Perching with head bowed on a low branch just a few metres above the water level, he waits patiently for his unsuspecting prey, plunging suddenly and lethally to retrieve his prize. Will occupy any freshwater source from forest streams to open lakeshores provided that a suitable hunting perch is available.
