YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO Coccyzus americanus
Familiar to many North Americans, this migrant cuckoo is a widespread annual but scarce visitor to Paraguay. It is extremely similar to the Pearly-breasted Cuckoo, another scarce migrant, but can be distinguished by the reddish colouration of the primaries and white rather than greyish underparts. Like other Coccyzus cuckoos this species specialises in hunting caterpillars, using the long, thin bill to pluck the juicy morsels from the underside of leaves.
