FAMILY COREIDAE: LEAF-FOOTED BUGS
Coreid Bugs are aptly-named for the leaf-like appendages that they carry on the hind legs. Though worldwide in distribution they reach their greatest diversity in the tropics. Most species are dull brownish in colour, but brightly-coloured species do exist. The body outline is narrow and somewhat oval and the largest species may reach 4cm in length. The pronotum is large and broad, making the head appear somewhat small. The four-segmented antennae have a constricted base where they meet the head. Coreids have well-developed wings and the membranous portion of the wings are heavily-veined forming cells. The hindlegs are usually enlarged and thickened, and in some species similar appendages may also be seen on the antennae. Thoracic scent glands produce strong-smelling, defensive chemicals. Coreids are herbivorous, sucking juices from shoots, buds, leaves and tendrils of herbaceous plants. Some species are considered serious pests. The following is a very incomplete list of the Paraguayan species of Coreids based on the publications of Dr Harry Brailovsky. Those marked with an * are those for which we currently have images:
Cebrenis centrolineata, (Westwood 1842)
Cebrenis cauta, Brailovsky 1995
Lamniceps obscurior, Brailovsky & Barrera 2006
Placoscelis limbata, (Berg)
Placoscelis pagana, (Burmeister)
*Spartocera batatas, (Fabricius)
*Spartocera fuscus, (Thunberg)
Zicca annulata, (Burmeister 1835)
Zicca cornuta, Stal 1860
Zicca stali, Berg 1879
