PILAR TUCO-TUCO Ctenomys pilarensis
Endemic to Paraguay this recently described species is found mainly in sandy areas in the southwestern department of Ñeembucú where the species was discovered by Professor Julio Contreras. As with other members of the family it is a highly fossorial, colonial rodent which fills a similar niche to the African mole-rats, feeding largely on subterranean roots.
