Smith P 2008 - FAUNA Paraguay Handbook of the Mammals of Paraguay Number 15 Southern Long-nosed Armadillo Dasypus hybridus
Pdf file 1.94mb
Dasypus armadillos are comonly known as "long-nosed" armadillos or Narigones in Spanish, for obvious reasons. They are characterised by the long thin snout and big rabbit-like ears. The Lesser Long-nosed is a small, open country species which is apparently very rare in southern Paraguay. It is best distinguished from other species by its dark colouration, 6 or 7 uniformly dark movable bands on the carapace, medium length ears (25-30% of head length) and short tail. Considered by some to be a subspecies of Dasypus septemcinctus.
