CHACO MARA Dolichotis salinicola
Like a strange hybrid between a rabbit and a guinea-pig, the Chaco Mara is a common sight in many areas of the Chaco. They are active by day and in unpopulated areas are frequently seen on roads and tracks, usually in areas of thorn scrub or forest. In certain areas of the Chaco they are hunted for food by indigenous groups, their abundance and diurnal habitats making them an easy target.
