HELMETED WOODPECKER Dryocopus galeatus ATLANTIC FOREST VULNERABLE
Once considered "South America´s Ivorybill" the Helmeted Woodpecker is an extremely scarce and difficult to observe species. It inhabits the densest areas of the Atlantic Forest where it is easily overlooked when not calling. Just a few short decades ago it was known from only a handful of specimens, partly because the bulk of the population is in Paraguay, which is seriously underwatched, and partly because only recently have obervers become familiar with the vocalisations of the species.
