Dynamine agacles agacles (Dalman 1823)
ENG: Edged Sailor, Edged Drop
ESP: Gota ribeteada
JIZ: One of the "white sailors". Forewings triangular with relatively straight costa, and rounded apex and tornus. Hindwing rounded. Poses with wings folded in sunny areas. Attracted to dung and enriched muddy surfaces. Can be approachable. No sexual dimorphism. FLI: Fluttery but purposeful within 1m of the ground.
UPP: M/F (Fig 1) Forewing with broad black costal and outer margins and white central area and posterior margin. Base of costa tinged turquoise-blue, though often hard to see, ending where black margin is interrupted by a white emargination. Large white postmedial spot on costal margin often reaches costa, and two submarginal white spots on outer margin. Hindwing mostly white with broad black outer margin, sometimes showing a trace of a white "bubble" within the margin.
UND: M/F (Fig 1-3) Underside of forewing follows essentially the same pattern as the upperside but is more brightly coloured with a variably thin (Fig 1) or broad (Fig 2-3) rusty-brown edge to the costal and outer margins, and rusty-brown and blue pattern on the anterior base of the forewing. Upper white marginal spot is greatly elongated and reaches the apex. Hindwing mostly white with broad rusty-brown margin, encompassing a diagnostic white, semicircular "bubble" on the outer margin and indistinct short rusty-brown at the base.
BOD: M/F Upperside of body black, underside of body white. Antennae black with orange tips to clubs. Legs grey-white. Proboscis orange-yellow.
MMT: A small Biblid. CL - 14.5mm; BL - 10.5mm; WS - 32mm; HW - 2mm; AL - 7.5mm; n=1 (1 Unsexed). (ECOSARA Biodiversity Database)
SSP: The diagnostic character in this species is the white "bubble" in the brownish edge of the ventral hindwing. This species is closest to the other "white sailors", especially Dynamine coenus from which it is distinguished by a much broader black outer margin to the dorsal hindwing. Dynamine athemon has an additional vertical brownish line on the postmedial ventral hindwing but shares the broad black border of the dorsal hindwing. Dynamine myrrhina has an almost pure white hindwing above and below and a much more extensively white forewing with white reaching the costa postmedially.
ABU: Uncommon in suitable habitat.
HAB: Associated with humid forest edge, clearings and gardens in humid areas.
HOS: Plants in the family Euphorbiaceae such as Dalechampia, Sapium and Sebastiana. (Canals 2003).
