CHACO RAINBOW BOA Epicrates alvarezi CHACO
A handsome constrictor, the Chaco Rainbow Boa is a large snake reaching up to 1.5m in length. It is an adaptable species capable of inhabiting both humid and dry areas, where it feeds on small mammals, lizards, birds and their eggs. Females give birth to litters of around 15 live young. The Chaco and Atlantic Forest subpecies of what was formerly Epicrates cenchria have recently been split into separate species by Passos & Fernandes (2008) - Revision of the Epicrates cenchria complex (Serpentes: Boidae) - Herpetological Monographs 22 p1-30. This species is now considered endemic to the Chaco.
