GREEN-CHINNED EUPHONIA Euphonia chalybea ATLANTIC FOREST NEAR THREATENED
The Green-chinned Euphonia is in steep decline. An Atlantic Forest endemic with a huge bill that suggests a specialist, though as yet unknown, diet, it is known from very few Paraguayan records. The photos of a lone female below represent the first Paraguayan records of the bird since the mid-1990s and fears were beginning to grow of its local extinction. Though loss of habitat is obviously a factor in the decline of this handsome species, we donīt yet know enough about its biology to be able to propose effective conservation measures.
