PEREGRINE FALCON Falco peregrinus
Thickset and stocky, if you happen to be a pigeon or similarly-sized bird believe me you do not want him on your tail! The Peregrine is a bird with worldwide distribution, though in many areas populations have declined due to the use of pesticides such as DDT. In fact they are adaptable birds and prosper where they are allowed to, even being found in cities, including Asunción. The status of the species in Paraguay is unusual. For half of the year the Southern Cone cassini subspecies is present, but when that migrates south it is replaced for the other half of the year by the Northern Hemisphere subspecies anatum!
