RED-GARTERED COOT Fulica armillata
This is the largest Paraguayan coot and is rare, though odd individuals sometimes occur in winter in at the Bahía de Asunción and on the Chaco salt lagoons. These photos were taken in Argentina where the species is more common and are included here to facilitate identification of this species - coots can be tricky! To identify coots note the pattern of the shield, the shape of the head in profile (square) and the shape of the top of the shield (slightly pointed).
