RED-FRONTED COOT Fulica rufifrons
This is the smallest and rarest Paraguayan coot - it is reported to breed in small numbers in the Central Chaco but its presence has yet to be confirmed. These photos were taken in Argentina where the species is more common and are included here to facilitate identification of this species - coots can be tricky! To identify coots note the pattern of the shield, the shape of the head in profile (pointed on crown) and the shape of the top of the shield (pointed). Note also that this species swims and behaves more like a Common Moorhen than a Coot, and holds the tail cocked.
