RUFOUS-TAILED JACAMAR Galbula ruficauda
With its huge bill, you could be half forgiven for assuming that this glittering beauty was a giant hummingbird! Jacamars spend much of their time sitting still, moving the head side to side and looking for flying prey. Then suddenly they will shoot out, grab the unfortunate insect with their bill and return to their perch. In Paraguay the species has been recorded on very few occasions, largely because its range covers only the most inaccessible parts of the Chaco!
