RUDDY QUAIL-DOVE Geotrygon montana
Deep in the undergrowth of humid forest lurks this other-worldly looking dove. His steep forehead and strange eye give him an odd expression, but if you get the chance to study it in the field then you have been extremely lucky, this is not a bird that likes to be seen!

Gallery 2 - Geotrygon montana nest
A nest of this highly secretive species was found on 25 October 2012 at PROCOSARA, San Rafael NP, Departamento Itapúa. The nest of this species rarely found, and this is the first reported in Paraguay. The nest was located on gathered leaf litter on a Chusquea bamboo tangle at a height of about 150cm. It was crudely constructed of short twigs and pieces of bamboo, some bearing dried green leaves. Dead leaves in the cup of the nest may have been lining or may have been the result of litter fall. Fresh bamboo branches formed a canopy above the nest. The clutch of two warm buffy, "hen-coloured" eggs were being incubated by the male when the nest was found at 10am. Eggs measured 28x22mm and 29x21mm respectively. All photos and video by Paul Smith.
