RED-CROWNED ANT-TANAGER Habia rubica
One of the larger tanagers to haunt the undergrowth of humid forest, flocks of Red-crowned Ant-Tanager advertise their presence with loud, thrush-like, "Chack" calls. They are nervous birds, difficult to observe despite their size. Young males initially resemble females, but gradually develop the red plumage of adults. Only when they are completely red are they considered mature enough to compete for a mate. Beforehand the females barely give the poor frustrated souls a second glance!
