FORMICIDAE - ANTS
SUBFAMILY HETEROPONERINAE
The members of this subfamily were formerly included in the family Ponerinae in the Tribe Ectatommini.
Habitat:
Humid and dry forest.
Distribution: The subfamily is distributed largely in the Southern Hemisphere. The genus Acanthoponera is distributed from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. Heteroponera occurs from Costa Rica to Argentina, with other species in Australia and New Zealand.
Genera: Two genera occur in Paraguay Acanthoponera, Mayr and Heteroponera, Mayr.
Acanthoponera (1 species) - Yellow or brownish ants with large convex eyes and shallow antennal grooves. Peciole ends in a dorso-posterior point. Two propodeal teeth present. Tarsal claws with basal lobe. Principally nocturnal.
Heteroponera (4 species) - Front of head with a long medial ridge from the vertex to the clypeus. Tarsal claws lack basal lobe and propodeal spines short. Small colonies of a dozen or so individuals in rotten wood, under rizomes of epiphytes or under stones in humid areas.
Species: Five species of this subfamily are documented as occurring in Paraguay.
