PIED PLOVER Hoploxypterus cayanus
This handsome little plover is found only on the river systems of the northern Orient where it is a distinctive inhabitant of sandbanks. This species has a long history of taxonomic uncertainty and is frequently considered to be a close relative of the lapwings, though most modern works now place it in its own genus Hoploxypterus, which roughly translated means "weapon wings", a reference to the sharp spurs on the carpal joints.
