VARIABLE ORIOLE Icterus pyrrhopterus
He may not be much to look at, but the Epaulet Oriole is one of the most gifted impersonators in the Paraguayan avifauna. Over 25 different bird calls have been heard to be produced by this species, and I watched a single bird produce a melody of calls combining the voices of several different species including Black-goggled Tanager, Guira Cuckoo and Saffron Finch! Though his own notes are sometimes harsh and ugly, he is as gifted as Fatboy Slim when it comes to mixing the work of others! Note that this species was until recently known as the Epaulet Oriole Icterus cayanensis.
