ATLANTIC FOREST ONCILLA Leopardus guttulus
The smallest of the Paraguayan felines, this species is smaller and more lightweight than a domestic cat. In general the base colour of the pelage is yellowish and the spots are small rossettes. They are generally rare and shy throughout their range, and are rarely seen. The individual in (FPMAM481PH-FPMAM484PH) was found as an abandoned kitten and raised to adulthood in semi-liberty at PROCOSARA where it behaved just like a slightly mischievous domestic cat until it eventually made the decision to return to the forest, returning only occasionally to annoy the chickens! Named "Tirica" the local name for small spotted cats, he has since been made famous as the mascot and emblem of the conservation group PROCOSARA.
