GREY-FRONTED DOVE Leptotila rufaxilla
A large, humid forest ground dove, so similar to his close relative the White-tipped Dove that a good look is often needed to be able to tell them apart. Behaviourally they are very similar, but while the White-tipped has managed to adapt to a host of environments both humid and dry, the Grey-fronted is loathe to leave the security of the Atlantic forest undergrowth, making him that bit more difficult to see!

Gallery 2 - Leptotila rufaxilla nest
A nest of this forest dove was located on 4 December 2012 at PROCOSARA, San Rafael NP, Departamento Itapúa.The nest was situated at the end of a trunk that had fallen across a trail, with the platform at the end of the log a metre or so inside a dense bamboo stand at a height of approximately 170cm. The nest was a typical untidy platform of short sticks with the cup lined by sparse grass and odd downy feathers. The platform dimensions were 165x155mm and the cup 95x90mm. As is typical of columbids two white eggs were present. One egg was present in the nest at least 48 hours before the second was laid. Eggs measured 28x22.1mm and 28.6x21.6mm respectively. The sitting bird flushed noisily from the nest when approached. All photos by Paul Smith.
