COMPARATIVE GALLERY: SUBFAMILY LIBYTHEINAE - SNOUTS
It shouldnīt take you long to work out where the common name of this subfamily comes from, the extended mouth parts making the Libytheinid butterflies look "big-nosed". It is a small subfamily with only 10 species known worldwide, and only one species in South America. They are Nymphalids, the front legs being reduced so they appear to only have four legs. Adults perch head downwards on twigs mimicking dead leaves.
