D´ORBIGNY´S ROUND-EARED BAT Lophostoma silvicolum
Smith P 2008 - FAUNA Paraguay Handbook of the Mammals of Paraguay Number 29 d´Orbigny´s Round-eared Bat Lophostoma silvicolum
Pdf file 784kb
A small Phyllostomid with huge, rounded ears, this is an uncommon but widespread species in Paraguay. Members of this genus can be identified by the fact that they have only a single pair of lower incisors, a mostly naked muzzle, a small fold of skin joining the ears and the fact that they tend to roll their ears when handled. The latter is considered an adaptation to the fact that they habitually roost in cramped, arboreal termite mounds.
