ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The author would personally like to thank everybody who contributed directly or indirectly to the production of this volume. Particular thanks to Professor Nilton Cáceres for reviewing species accounts, helping to source photographs and for providing me with a copy of his book Os Marsupiais do Brasil which proved to be an important reference. The late Juan Carlos Chébez provided me with important references for Argentina and Donald W Duszynski very kindly collated hard to find references on Coccidian parasites for me. A host of others contributed indirectly by making their papers available online through their websites, not least Professor Rui Cerqueira, Dr Marcus Vieira, Dr Diego Astúa de Morães and Professor Cáceres, all of whom are involved in groundbreaking studies of the ecology of this oft-neglected group. Other colleagues who took the time to send me important pdfs were Simone Sommer, Thomas Puttker, Enrique González and Marcelo Passamani. Thanks also to Dr Robert Owen and Professor Julio Contreras for always being available to help and for making their respective extensive libraries available to me.
For the taxonomic sections of this volume Dr Alfred L. Gardner deserves special mention as the editor of Mammals of South America Vol 1 (2007) as do the various professionals who contributed to its production (which reads like a who´s who of the greatest mammalogists of our age!!) - for the sections relevant to this volume these are in alphabetical order Rui Cerqueira, C. Ken Creighton, Marian Dagosto, Alfred L Gardner, Charles O. Handley Jr, James L. Patton, Ronald H. Pine, Maraia Nazareth F. da Silva, Barabara R Stein and Christopher J Tribe. This was an indispensable reference upon which I have drawn heavily and without which this volume would be considerably poorer.
Thanks to all who have contributed photographs, data and material to FAUNA Paraguay www.faunaparaguay.com, especially those who have contributed directly to this volume: all the staff at the Para La Tierra biological station, Sylvia Qu, Philip Myers, Alberto Esquivel, José Luis Cartes, Karina Atkinson, Ulf Drechsel and Flavia Netto. Additional photographs not taken in Paraguay were provided by Nilton Cáceres, Mauricio Graipel, Thomas Puttker and Louise Emmons. Thanks also to those who have accompanied me in the field during the collection of data used in this volume, especially Attila Bankovics, Hugo del Castillo, Lars Hansen, Hans Hostettler, Flavia Netto and Bryan Wainwright. Finally my thanks to those others who I have inadvertently, but almost certainly, forgotten to mention!
The FAUNA Paraguay Handbook of the Mammals of Paraguay should be seen as a work in progress and will be updated as and when new material is published or becomes available. If you would like to contribute to future editions or have any comments, queries or corrections related to this volume, you can email the author at:
