DWARF BROCKET-DEER Mazama nana
Paraguay´s smallest deer, reaching a maximum of 12kg in weight this little animal is a rarely-seen inhabitant of dense undergrowth in Atlantic Forest areas. Their behaviour is little known but they appear to be active both by day and at night. The Guaraní name Pororoka (meaning something akin to "popcorn") comes from the defensive noises made by this species when disturbed - sounding like popcorn popping in a pan. Males have short antlers which are renewed annually.
