FAMILY MIRIDAE: PLANT BUGS
A huge and highly variable family with over 8000 species known and perhaps as many again undescribed. The general appearance is variable with some species short and ovaloid and others slender and elongate, and some brightly-coloured whilst others are more cryptic. The largest species reach 15mm, but the vast majority are much smaller. Mirids are recognised by the four-segmented antennae and rostrum and the presence of two closed cells in the membranous region of the forewings. Phytophagous, predatory and saprophagous species are known and many are considered pests.
