MASKED DUCK Nomonyx dominicus
Despite being relatively common, this shy little duck is rarely observed as a result of its skulking habits. By day small flocks seem to cling to the security of dense waterside vegetation, and only as later afternoon approaches do they venture out into the open. Spook them and they erupt into flight, the square, white patch on their upperwing eyecatching as they whizz past.
