GEOFFROY´S CAT Oncifelis geoffroyi
Scarcely larger than a house cat the Geoffroy´s Cat is the most common small feline in the Paraguayan Chaco. They occur in semi-open scrubby areas and even agricultural land where they feed mainly on rodents and small birds. Geoffroy´s Cat is nocturnal. It was formerly heavily hunted for its pelt, but a hunting ban enforced in 1975 has allowed it to recover its population. Geoffroy´s Cat is best identified by its short tail, flattened head and olive-brown small-spotted fur, though melanistic (black) individuals are occasionally recorded.
