CHACO CHACHALACA Ortalis canicollis CHACO
The chicken-like Chaco Chachalaca (try saying that after a few Pilsens!) is a sociable bird which is abundant in most of the Dry Chaco. They don´t fare quite so well closer to human habitation though! Their mouthful of a name is an onomatopoeic rendition of their raucous calls, given in the morning and the evening, and responsible for waking many a slumbering ornithologist up from their blissful sleep!
