FORMICIDAE - ANTS
SUBFAMILY PARAPONERINAE
Previously treated as the Tribe Paraponerini in the subfamily Ponerinae. This subfamily contains a single species, with a second species known only from fossil remains.
Habitat: Forested habitats in humid areas.
Distribution: Confined to the Neotropics the Paraponerinae is widespread from Nicaragua to Paraguay
Characteristics: Immediately recognisable by its large size. Pronotum with lateral swellings and pronounced antennal grooves curve upwards over the eye.
Genera: One genus occurs in Paraguay Paraponera, F. Smith.
Species: One species of this subfamily is documented as occurring in Paraguay.
