RED-CRESTED CARDINAL Paroaria coronata
Despite their abundance the Red-crested Cardinal never ceases to please birders with his bright plumage and audacity. He is an adaptable bird, in certain parts of his range forming huge flocks too numerous to count, and even reaching urban areas around Asunción. Cardinals are so named because their red heads reminded early visitors to South America of the red headwear worn by cardinals in the Catholic church.
