PLANALTO HERMIT Phaethornis pretrei
A bird that is in a permanent rush, this large species is one of two hermits that occur in Paraguay. Rather more catholic in its habitat tastes than the very similar Scale-throated Hermit Phaethornis eurynome (an Atlantic Forest endemic), this species occasionally occurs alongside it as well as in a variety of drier habitats - though usually in association with waterways. Perhaps the easiest way to tell the species apart is by the overall more reddish colouration of the Planalto, especially on the rump.
