NEOTROPIC CORMORANT Phalcrocorax brasilianus
The only Paraguayan representative of the familiar cormorant family, the Neotropic is a drab, brownish bird that feeds mostly on fish. Unlike the superficially similar Anhinga which stabs its prey with the bill, the cormorant fishes in a more conventional way, diving and grasping the fish after a short pursuit. Once captured the fish is manipulated in the bill and swallowed head first - many Paragauayan fish are spiny, so imagine what would happen if it went down the wrong way! Swallowing the fish can cause problems for the bird, we watched the individual in the video play around with his food for 10 minutes and he still couldn´t figure out how to swallow it!
