SPOTTED-BELLIED SIDE-NECKED TURTLE Phrynops hilarii
Distributed in Humid Chaco habitats in the Paraguay River basin, this is a fairly large freshwater turtle which can be identified by the contrasting head pattern (uniform dorsally) and the large black blotches on the underside. It is apparently rare in Paraguay, though perhaps easily overlooked given that its known range is in some of the least sampled areas of the country.
