BAND-TAILED MANAKIN Pipra fasciicauda
Lurking in dense thickets within humid forest is this little jewel! Brightly-coloured males "dance" for the dull yellow females at traditional display sites known as leks - the best dancer fathers the most offspring. Leks are complex affairs, with younger males forced to occupy peripheral sites and watch as the more experienced males inseminate the enamoired females. If they are lucky and persistent enough they can gain centre stage over the course of several years as the older males pass their dancing peak and drop out of contention.
