LOWLAND HEPATIC-TANAGER Piranga flava
A big red male with a big yellow female, they make an unusually brightly-coloured pair! The Lowland Hepatic-Tanager is a southern relative of the Northern Hepatic-Tanager which reaches the States. In fact, along with an Andean population the three birds were formerly considered a single species under the generic name Hepatic Tanager. However evidence suggests that these three populations are ecologically separate and so the component members cannot interbreed, in other words they act as three different species under the biological species concept.
