RUSSET-WINGED SPADEBILL Platyrinchus leucoryphus ATLANTIC FOREST VULNERABLE
This dull but distinctive little flycatcher is up there amongst the top targets for birders visiting Paraguay. As recently as 1995 it was known only from 10 specimens collected a long time previously and very little was known about its biology. The discovery of several populations around Paraguay in the 1990s enabled the species threat category to be downgraded to Vulnerable, but the species remains rare and has a very precise niche within the Atlantic Forest resulting in a local distribution.
