FORMICIDAE - ANTS
SUBFAMILY PROCERATIINAE
Long considered as the tribe Proceratiini of the family Ponerinae.
Habitat: Humid forest areas.
Distribution: Southern Hemisphere.
Characteristics: Ants in this subfamily are small with the antennae rising at the extreme anterior part of the head. Eyes are reduced and promesonotal suture is fused. Gaster strongly curved anterio-ventrally.
Genera: One genus occurs in Paraguay Discothyrea, Roger.
Discothyrea (2 species) - Diminutive ants with the eye reduce to a single ommatidium. The antennal insertions are exposed and located on a cephalic ridge that passes above the mandibles. Nests are terrestrial in leaf litter. These ants are predators on arthropod eggs. Identification is difficult on account of their small size and lack of a modern and reliable key.
Species: Two species in this subfamily are documented as occurring in Paraguay.
