CRAB-EATING RACCOON Procyon cancrivorus
Anybody who has had a raccoon rummaging through their dustbins will be able to testify to the ingenuity and adaptability of the creature! The Paraguayan representative of the group is a different species from that in North America but its personality is much the same. In the Chaco they are one of the commonest mammals. The Guaraní know them as Aguara Popé, which roughly translates to "Dog with Hands" on account of their human-like footprints, whilst to the Spanish he is Osito Lavador, or "Little Washing Bear" a reference to their habit of carefully washing food before consuming it.
